The Queen's Diamond Jubilee
Thursday, 26 April 2012 19:52

To mark 60 years of The Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. Celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

Queen

60 years of The Queen's reign

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953.

She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002.

Diamond Jubilee website

A Diamond Jubilee website, including two new photographs of The Queen, has been launched by the Royal Household. It features the latest news, photographs, announcements and historical information about The Queen's 60-year reign.

Here at Broadhembury we want to ensure that all visitors will enjoy this wonderful event – and an extra day's holiday! We are planning a "street party"* and extra entertainment for children which will include: an octopus slide & bouncy castle, gladiator challenge bouncy castle, football shootout, and ball pond for younger children. *We'll lay out the tables and you bring your own food, drink and table decorations

If you would enjoy attending this event during your stay here, (which we will schedule for Sunday 3rd June at 5pm but if weather unkind, will change it to Monday 4th June), please let us know. There will be no charge for any part of this event, but we will asking for donations to our chosen local charity "THE DEMELZA HOUSE CHILDREN'S HOSPICE"

BEST DRESSED TENT, CARAVAN or MOTORHOME. There will be a prize for the best dressed unit, so use your artistic skills to decorate your tent, caravan or motorhome. Let's see what YOU can do.

VOLUNTEERS & IDEAS Please let us know if you have any other ideas to make the weekend something we'll all remember. If you feel able to help to organise children's races etc. we'll be very pleased to hear from you.

We look forward to celebrating this very special occasion with you.

Water Voles out of the Blue!
Thursday, 26 April 2012 13:01

News from Kent Wildlife Trust

image001Water voles out of the blue.

It would appear that water voles may be living at Hothfield Heathlands. Hothfield Common, ASHFORD, TN26 1HD!  They usually live along the river, or in the long ditches that run from the bottom of the bogs. However, these charismatic rodents have popped up at the reserve, living in the highest area, sandwiched between a road and some intensively grazed fields!!

Water voles live next to water bodies where there is a bank to build a burrow and lots of vegetation to eat. However in recent years the introduced American mink has been having a devastating impact on their population. This has led them to live in some untypical areas – away from the ditches and rivers loved by the mink.

Why not visit...

This ancient woodland is prolific with spring flowers including violet, primrose, wood spurge and bluebells. There is also a huge diversity of birds including nightingales, warblers and woodpeckers.  This site is also one of the best for lady orchid which can be seen May - June along with common spotted, early-purple and fly orchid.

Carbon Monoxide Safety
Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:31

PLANNING A BARBECUE?

ARE YOU AWARE OF

THE DANGERS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

and THE RISK OF FIRE?

Please read the information below so that you and your family can enjoy a happy, problem free barbecue.

Barbecues and other fire containing appliances*  should never be lit in awnings or tents.

*including fire pits, chimineas, braziers etc.

FIRE PRECAUTIONS should be taken to ensure that if your barbecue or fire container did get out of control and resulted in a fire you have satisfactory means of fighting the fire immediately.

Have a fire blanket, full bucket of water or similar fire fighting appliance alongside you when you light your barbecue.

Ensures barbecues are at least 2 meters from any fence or hedge.

Protect children and make sure that they understand the dangers.

Never light a fire on the ground and always use a stand, slabs or bricks for disposable barbecues (Never the ground).

CARBON MONOXIDE – the silent killer. All campers should be aware of the risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning if they light a barbecue in awnings, tents and camping pods, either for warmth or to cook. Last year saw deaths and many more near-misses and everything possible should be done to guard against this.

Carbon Monoxide is poisonous and known as the ‘invisible killer’ since it is colourless, tasteless and odourless. It is produced when carbon (including gas, wood, oil or barbecue coals) is burned with insufficient oxygen. Carbon Monoxide poisoning happens when the gas is breathed in, even at very low levels. The symptoms are like having flu, but can lead to lasting damage to health and death. Victims will not be aware of their poisoning and the young and old are at particular risk.

Never take a barbecue, fire appliance or lit charcoal into an enclosed space like a tent, caravan or awning.

Make sure camping lights and stoves are clean and properly adjusted.

Stay safe and enjoy a very happy holiday!!
